In the last century when we began our exploration into Cabernet Franc, we did so with a constant sense of resolve to stay keenly aware of all things ‘Cabernet Franc’. So it was with resolve that we investigated and strived to understand the source material, the clonal selections as they were evolving throughout the 1990’s. The choice of Cabernet Franc clones before this time was minimal, but in those roaring 90’s a number of great clones made their way into the vineyards of Napa Valley. One of these unique selections was Clone 214, a cultivar that originated in the Loire Valley of France, home to some of the worlds’ most renowned Cabernet Franc vineyards and producers.

This Premier Etage exudes aromas of black cherry, raspberry and floral perfume with the most delicate hints of dried herbs. On the palate the wine appears svelte with the black cherry appearing again which mingles with dark Swiss chocolate notes. The wine finishes with a gentle briar, smoke and soft gentle tannins extending the fruit experience through a long, satisfying finish. We always view the Premier Etage to be a ‘Vin de Garde’, a wine to age, meaning that with proper cellaring the wine will display additional complexities and nuance.

The color of this wine is a deep ruby red with highlights of violet blue on the edges. The aromas are reserved at first, but blossom into an exotic mix of bright cherry, black currant, spice and herbs layered with a hint of creamy vanilla. The palate teases with the similar cherry and currant flavors then bursts into a broad and mouth filling wine that is elegant and focused from the beginning to the finish. The structure of the wine holds together each of the components for a seamless impression, with firm, ripe tannins and an everlasting finish.

Bright, clear and brilliant deep red color with youthful violet on the edge, the aromatics of this wine are a little darker than previous vintages with black cherry, plum, sage and herbs de Provence overlaid with a touch of cedar and tobacco scents
